Important Information

Interesting facts that may well make the decision to close Logue Brook Dam into a major election issue (Water mismanagement in W.A.)

DID YOU KNOW?

  • In Western Australia Nanga Dell Park Dam, Samson Dam, Stirling Dam, The Drakesbrook Pool, The Aboriginal Pool, the Hamel Stops, Yarloop natural pool, and now Logue Brook Dam all previous recreational water bodies have been closed to the public in recent years.
  • 19.1 Gl went over the wall at Wellington Dam this year…Wasted!
  • 20Gl was scoured from the bottom of Wellington Dam this year, let go out to the ocean… Wasted!
  • Industry in the region use in excess of 300 Ml annually of drinking quality water to wet down roads etc to keep dust down.
  • 20 Gl is wasted in losses from the IWSS water supply in Perth every year…Wasted!
  • The current value of the water in Logue Brook Dam to the Water Corporation is approx 3c per kilolitre. Under this new deal sanctioned by the Carpenter Labor Government, Water Corp can now sell the water to the public for up to $1.70 per kilolitre!!! That's a 5567% profit increase
  • Jim Gill, the Chief at the Water Corp has stated that within 7 years the dams will become redundant due to drying climate when in fact there has been no reduction in average rainfall in Western Australia since 1876 according to BOM figures…see graphs at Drying Climate?
  • By 2015 requirement for drinking water is an additional 107 GL. We now have available 45 GL from the Desal Unit #1. 11.8 GL from two dams resulting from the Harvey Water Trade. Estimated additional water needed each year is 5 GL, say from 2007 to 2015 = 8 x 5 equates to a total 40 GL. Currently 56.8 GL is available. By 2011 an additional 50 GL available from Desal #2. Total by 2011 available = 106.8 GL. Throw in the 5.3 from Logues in 2010 and you have a total amount available by 2015 of 111.8 GL, which reflects an EXCESS of beyond Water Corporations stated requirements. (Desal unit # 2 is also being built to have the production capacity of 100 GL).
  • In addition to the above scenario there are move afoot to increase the use of recycled water for industry.
  • There is consideration for a small desal unit to be installed on Wellington Dam.
  • There are many farms down south in Harvey that are being sold hence the lower need for irrigation water.
  • Industry is buying up many farms in the area to acquire the water rights for their industry expansion.
  • The population of WA has reduced their consumption up to 17 GL per year since the inception of rostered watering days.
  • Currently we have found 166 dual use dams operating in other states and in the Northern Territory. A number of these dams allow unrestricted recreation.
