CLOSURE OF LOGUE BROOK DAM FOR RECREATIONAL USE
Introduction
In November, 2007 the WA Labor Government made a decision to change the status of Logue Brook Dam from Irrigation to Potable water so as to inject 5 Gigalitres of potable water into the ‘Integrated Water Supply System’. (The IWSS delivers water to 1.6 million people across Perth, the South West, Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Wheatbelt, Goldfields and Agricultural regions). Although a number of studies were conducted, all excluding dual use, WA Labor Government opted to close the dam and catchment area for recreational use.
For over 40 years the Dam, Caravan Park and surrounding bush land has provided a recreation area for tourists, locals and non locals for camping, bush walking, horse riding, fishing, maroning, water activities and a place to bond with family and friends. Closure of the dam also denies access to Hoffman Mill and the closure of Lake Brockman Caravan Park.
In all this time the water in the Dam has remained pristine and is why it has been targeted for the IWSS.
As a result a concerned group of people lobbied the WA Labor Government to better understand the decision and to see if there was any possibility we could work together to share the facility for now and future generations to come.
Unfortunately Labor adopted a not negotiable stance on the pretext we were a minority and their decision was for the better good of all. The Liberals through Murray Cowper MLA member for Murray, on the other hand, have been very supportive of our concerns and will support the re-opening of Logues to recreational use and make it available to the IWSS.
In order to present a united front it was decided to form the ‘Save Logue Brook Dam Action Group Inc’. The Action Group is not for profit and is not politically aligned; we will however support the party that facilitates recreational areas which encourages family involvement to promote health and wellbeing.
Some Important Facts
A Note From the President
For over 20 years myself and many others have enjoyed Logues with our families and friends. Several of us have on occasions had up to four generations socialising and integrating with each other.
Please help us to not only preserve Logues but also prevent the closure of other important recreational facilities for our current and future generations.
